The Best of the AMAs Red Carpet 2016

The American Music Awards appear to have a confusing dress code. Comfort was clearly a high priority on the list this year on the red carpet at the AMAs, with both women and men obliging. However, this didn’t stop several over-the-top glamourous looks from gracing the carpet as well. These are our favourite looks from the AMAs for 2016, ranging from the super opulent to the super relaxed!

Keke Palmer

While currently serving up girl-next-door realness on Scream Queens, Keke Palmer let her ghetto fabulousness fly at the AMAs. This updated take on a Lil Kim-inspired number pushes the boundaries in every direction. Understated accessories and strategic use of colour make sure to place all emphasis on the outfit itself, and Keke absolutely nails the early 2000s look even Mary J. Blige couldn’t hope to pull off.

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson is the epitome of comfort and style in an oversized shirt dress by Celine. A flash of lingerie underneath evokes the sleepwear as daywear trend of seasons past, and honestly nobody looks more at ease and more comfortable at the AMAs this year than Taraji. With a history of minimalist elegance on the red carpet, she has delivered yet another laid back look without coming close to looking sloppy.

Selena Gomez

For me, Selena Gomez is the prime example of the glamour on display at the AMAs this year. A simple red gown by Prada accented with Cartier jewels is an easy contender for the look of the evening. Selena stole the show, without going decadently overboard.

Niall Horan

Niall Horan keeps it light and easy in a patterned suit and a half open shirt. While avoiding looking messy, Niall still manages to look at ease and super comfortable even in a classic blazer and trousers, all thanks to the styling. A tan loafer and properly tailored shirt make the look far more casual and comfortable, without detracting from the merits of the suit itself.

Aidan Alexander

Aidan Alexander’s outfit looks like it’s ripped straight from a style maven on the streets of Milan during fashion week! This look is the pure, unadulterated street wear. Use of bold colours and prints draw attention, while the more crisp and layered top half of the look makes sure it isn’t too much all at once. Aidan manages to balance the outrageous just right to obtain a look that’s wild, while curated and never messy looking.

Sean O’Donnell

Sean shows us how to take a classic suit and add a modern twist. While not overdoing, subtle use of colour and playing with different textures creates a look that feels fresh, effortless, and totally appropriate for every occasion. A simpler take on a suit can work just as well as a more classic tried and true look, when done correctly.

Of course, everybody at the AMAs slayed this year. With so many amazing looks to choose from, narrowing down the best of the best was super tough, and these are just our favourites from the night! Fashion is subjective, just like every artform!
